Questions people ask

Where does the data come from?

From the All India Pincode Directory published by India Post on the Open Government Data platform (data.gov.in), under the Government Open Data Licence – India. We refresh our copy from time to time.

Why does a pincode show two states or districts?

A few pincodes near borders have post offices in more than one district or state. The main state is the one most of its post offices are in.

What is the GST state code?

The two-digit code GST uses for each state and union territory. It is the first two digits of every GSTIN registered there, and decides whether a sale is charged CGST and SGST or IGST.

Is there a limit on lookups?

Yes, a gentle one: about 30 lookups a minute from one network, to keep the tool fast for everyone. If you see “Too many lookups”, wait a minute.

A pincode is missing. Why?

New or changed pincodes can take time to appear in the published directory. Check with India Post if a pincode you know is not found.
