GSTIN checker

Type or paste a GST number to check that it is well formed: 15 characters, a real state code, a PAN in the middle and the right check digit at the end. It catches most typing mistakes before they reach an invoice.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the 15-character GSTIN.
  2. Read what each part means: state, PAN, entity number and check digit.
  3. If it fails, the checker says which part is wrong.
  4. To see whether the business is actually registered and active, use the GST portal’s taxpayer search.

Questions people ask

Does this tell me whether a GSTIN is registered and active?

No. It only checks that the number is valid in form: the right length, a real state code, the PAN pattern and the check digit. A well-formed GSTIN can still be cancelled, suspended or never issued. Check registration status on the official GST portal’s “Search Taxpayer” page.

What is the check digit?

The 15th character is calculated from the first 14 by a published mod-36 formula. If one character is mistyped, the check digit almost never matches, which is how most typos are caught.

What do the first two digits mean?

They are the state or union territory code under GST, for example 27 for Maharashtra, 07 for Delhi and 29 for Karnataka. 97 is “Other Territory” and 99 the Centre Jurisdiction.

Is the GSTIN I type sent anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser; nothing you type here is sent to MudraERP or stored.

Does it work for every kind of GSTIN?

It covers the standard 15-character format used by regular and composition taxpayers. Some special registrations (for example TDS or TCS deductors, or UN bodies) follow different patterns and may show as invalid here.
